Lehigh Valley Honda to Host Free Hybrid Car Safety Clinic for Area Firefighters and First Responders
Emmaus, PA – July 8, 2009 – Lehigh Valley Honda, in partnership with the Eastern PA EMS Council and Lehigh County Community College, will be hosting firefighters, EMS Technicians and other first responders at a Hybrid Car Safety Clinic at their facility located on the Lehigh Street Auto Mile in Emmaus. Due to the success and overwhelming demand from previous Hybrid Car Safety Clinics, Lehigh Valley Honda will be hosting two separate clinics this year. The first clinic is scheduled for Thursday July 23rd and the second will be held on Thursday August 6th. Both will be from 6:30-9:00pm. Topics discussed during the five breakout sessions at each event will cover how to disable a hybrid car battery, fire hazards posed by hybrid cars, the effects of water on hybrid cars, and air bag sensor locations and causes of deployment.
Lehigh Valley Honda began conducting these clinics a few years ago in response to stories in the national news media about firefighters and EMS technicians being killed when they responded to accidents involving hybrid cars where the complex hybrid battery systems ended up electrifying the bodies of the cars as a result of the accident. “First responders were approaching the cars not knowing that they were hybrids and they ended up getting electrocuted when they attempted to rescue the victims. Hearing this, we felt compelled to reach out to first responder in the Lehigh Valley and beyond and offer to educate them on ways to spot a hybrid” said Paul Goodwin, General Manager of Lehigh Valley Honda. “The response has been overwhelming.”
Firefighters, EMS technicians and other first responders interested in participating are being asked to register with John Ott of Lehigh County Community College.
