All about the Suspension in Your Used Cars

auto serviceThe suspension system in your used cars is a vital system to a smooth ride. But how much do you actually know about your car’s suspension and the parts that go along with it? Here are some basic facts about how your suspension system works and what the various parts are for.

Shock Absorbers: The shock absorbers have two functions. The first function is to absorb the shock (just like the name implies) when driving on bumpy roads. Also, the shock absorbers manage the suspension regardless of the road conditions. They help the vehicle get a grip on the road so you do not feel the bumps as much. Shock absorbers have heavy-duty springs that change the energy of the shock to kinetic energy. A damper later dissipates the energy by forcing oil or gas through a constricted valve.

Springs: These parts of the car’s suspension system come in three different types – coil, leaf and torsion bars. The least common is torsion bars. The springs are what absorb the energy of the shock on bumpy terrain.

If you notice that your car is becoming harder to handle and you feel it swaying to one side or another, you may need repairs to your suspension system. The suspension system helps you keep the car under control with the least amount of effort.

Now that you know a little more about the suspension system on your used cars, you can feel more confident about looking for possible issues and describing them to the mechanic if you ever need repairs.
