Could Gov’t Pay You for Your Used Cars?

paIf you have an old clunker or gas-guzzler, the United States legislature is working on a program that would help you turn in those old used cars and get more cash to put towards a newer one.

In an effort to decrease the fuel consumption and environmental hazards in the United States, President Obama has “endorsed the idea of using public funds to pay drivers to scrap certain vehicles and replace them with new or more fuel-efficient ones.” That means that when you trade in your older vehicle, you may get money from the government AND the dealer to put towards another car as long as the one you choose is newer and more fuel-efficient.

Two bills concerning this idea have been proposed this year alone. One of the bills was introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein from California. The other was introduced by Representative Betty Sutton from Ohio. Environmentalists say these “cash for clunkers” programs are very helpful for the environment and buying a more efficient car can offset the cost within the first couple years. The good part is that the amount of the voucher that you’ll receive from the government is directly related to the type of new or used car you purchase and how many miles it get per gallon.
