A surprising study recently revealed that the most dangerous season for driving your used cars is not winter, as most people would think. In fact, according to the findings, more people die on American highways during the fall season…and in October particularly.
The report, which was conducted by the University of Michigan, showed that there were 10.2 deaths for every billion kilometers driven in October. In addition, the study found that November and December respectively follow October as the most dangerous months to be on the road.
Surprisingly, March has the lowest fatality rates at 8.8 deaths for every billion kilometers driven. February and April follow March on the list of least number of fatalities despite the snow, ice and wind that usually accompanies these months.
“The risk of fatality per distance driver in October is about 16 percent greater than the risk in March,” said Michael Sivak of the U-M Transportation Research Institute. “Everything else being equal, inclement weather – snow and ice – should increase the risk of driving. However, because inclement weather also leads to general reduction in speed, the net effect is not clear.”
Keep this in mind when driving your used cars in the various seasons. Knowing that more fatalities occur in October, November and December may cause you to be extra careful on the highways and avoid accidents.
