If you missed the opportunity to take advantage of the government’s “Cash for Clunkers” program (which ended up being a big mess if you ask me), you can still make your used cars more fuel-efficient. Here are some tips to help you save money at the pumps with your used cars.
1. Carpooling – Do you live near some of your co-workers? If so, consider carpooling. Taking a day or a couple days off from driving each week will do wonders for the amount of gas money you save.
2. Don’t Fill It Up – It might sound crazy to tell you not to fill up the tank on your used cars, but it can actually help you save money. The more gas you have in your tank, the heavier your car becomes and the less efficient it is as a result. Consider filling your tank up to the ¾ mark to carry less weight.
3. Use Your Cruise Control – When driving on the freeways or at constant speeds, use your cruise control. A steady, even speed makes your car more efficient than speeding up and slowing down all the time.
4. Roll Down the Windows – When driving through the city, using your car’s air conditioner destroys your fuel efficiency. Only use the A/C when on long trips and when going above 55 mph for the best gas mileage results.
Put these tips to use and you can make your used cars more efficient and not feel bad about missing the Cash for Clunkers program!
