We all know that we should check the fluids, the tires and other parts of our used cars periodically to make sure everything stays in working condition. But what is the recommended schedule or interval of time to check these things? Checking them too often is unnecessary and time consuming, but waiting too long could be harmful to your used car’s performance. Here is a brief list of intervals and what you should check during those time periods.
Weekly
Each week, be sure to give your tires a visual inspection. Look for any bulges or loss of air pressure that would be indicative of a leak or other problem. Also, check your lights – headlights, taillights, turn signals, etc. It’s easier to have someone flip the switches as you walk around the car, but you can also park close to a wall at night to check your lights because of the reflection.
Monthly
Your oil should be checked at least once a month. Top it off if it is low and change it if it looks watered down, bubbly or too thin. Also, check the level of coolant in the radiator and the brake fluid level. While you have the hood up, you might as well check the windshield wiper fluid. You should also check the tire pressure with a gauge each month, too.
