While these things surely are important, the most important thing to do during a test drive is to assess the mechanical reliability of the vehicle.

When you’re driving a used car, turn off anything that might make noise like the radio or a fan. Listen carefully to how the car sounds when you pull away, to see if anything jumps out at you.

When you’re on a test drive you need to listen to how the engine performs. The engine should run smoothly without any extra noises.

You also want to make sure the transmission shifts smoothly, and that there are no lurches, whirrs, or clunks when you shift.

The steering on the used car should be smooth and easy. There should be no pulling on the steering. While pulling steering can indicate something as simple as improperly inflated tires, it can also indicate bigger problems.

If possible, try to ride in the vehicle with someone else driving. Watch to make sure the car seems to line up with the position of the steering wheel. Pay attention for jumps, rough shifting, or engine noises that you might not notice when you’re driving.

Ultimately, the test drive is one of the most important steps in inspecting used cars.

We began to explain how to test drive a used car in our last entry of Master the Marketplace. Today, we will continue the test drive and help you build towards your final sales experience that will have you fixed in the seat of a brand new used vehicle! Isn’t that exciting?

As you start the test drive, remember to drive the car slowly. This is prime listening time, as you’ll be able to hear any squeaks or odd noises that may draw your attention. Feel and count the shift changes. Is anything out of the ordinary? Does everything feel right? Is there any slipping, hesitation, or vibrations?

Drive the car long enough to get the engine temperature up. Most car warning lights will come on only when the car’s engine is up to par. Check the rearview mirror for any smoke or strange gases when you accelerate, too.

Make sure you take your car on the highway as a part of the test drive. How does the car handle getting on the freeway and off of it? Does it merge well into traffic? Does your shoulder check have good vision from the interior of the car? Is there excessive wind noise from the windows and/or the tires? Is there cruise control and does it function properly?

As you continue to test drive used cars, keep these questions in mind and you will have mastered the test drive.

When taking a test drive of a used car, the roads you travel should consist of a variety of conditions and locations. Use city streets, backroads, and highways. Take smooth roads and try some sharp corners to see how the vehicle handles. Drive it at various speeds (within the speed limits of course) and test the stopping power in a safe and productive fashion.

Any dealership worth its salt will allow for such a test drive, as long as the salesperson is aware of the types of driving you intend to do. Prepare the salesperson ahead of time if you plan on stopping quickly or testing the accelaration, as you don’t want to shock your passenger.

Remember that you are looking for a vehicle that feels right to you. It should feel safe to operate within the testing limits you provide. It should be comfortable and should be able to handle the braking and accelerating that you put it through. Check how the suspension feels and how the car brings itself up to speed. If it feels rickety and uncertain, it probably is.

As you continue to learn what to watch for when taking a test drive, remember that you are ultimately in control and you are making the final decision. As we conclude our series on Mastering the Marketplace, remember to be confident and certain as you enter the process of buying used cars.
