If you plan on driving your used cars across the country this vacation season or just to a different state, you should familiarize yourself with the various traffic laws. Traffic regulations are made by the state and local governments so you cannot just assume the same laws apply everywhere.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized this problem and created a solution: an interactive map of the nation that shows different laws for different states.

One of the examples of varying state laws is the seatbelt requirement. In most states, a person in a moving vehicle that is not wearing a seatbelt is a primary offense, meaning an officer can pull the car over for that reason alone. In some states, that regulation only applies to passengers in the front seat while a seatbelt is mandatory for all passengers in some states.

Another common question drivers have concerns radar detectors. Some states allow them while others do not. Some states also prohibit the use of IR-absorbing license plate covers, which are covers that shield a license plate from getting its picture taken by automated cameras.

The interactive map is still in its beginning stages and does not show these laws just yet. Before leaving your home state in your used cars, make sure you know the various laws of the states you’ll be visiting to avoid getting a ticket.
