Keeping Brakes Healthy on Your Used Cars
We’ve said it a dozen times on this blog and we’ll probably say it a dozen more times: Used cars are a great investment and you get more “bang for your buck” if you take care of them properly. Following along those lines, here are some tips to help you keep your brakes working properly on your used cars.
Check the fluid. The brake fluid is the lifeblood of the braking system. If it goes dry, your brakes are going to be defective. Keep an eye on the level of the brake fluid and add some to the reservoir when it looks low to keep your brakes in proper working condition at all times.
Check the brake pads. On most used cars, you should be able to see the brake pads and rotor though the wheel on the car. As such, you can check the brake pads periodically to see if they are worn or in good condition. If the pads are less than the width of two pennies stacked on top of each other, it may be time to get a brake job.
Check the discs. Disc brakes are almost as easy to check as brake pads. Look for scratches along the rotors that are caused from defective or worn discs to determine if these need to be changed.
If you just make these simple checks a few times a year, you can ensure your brakes are offering the protection that they were made to offer.
