used carsUsed cars are a great investment. With some research and shopping around, you can find a used car that is right for you with a great price. But maintaining any car takes some proactive steps on your part if you want it to last for several years without a huge expense. Here are three things you can do to minimize the maintenance costs on your used cars.

1. Keep an eye on the various fluids. The fluids under the hood are what keep your used car happy. Brake fluid, coolant, oil, transmission fluid and others make it run efficiently and smoothly. When there is a leak, you should fix it immediately to avoid costly damages. The only way to know if there is a leak, however, is to check the fluids every so often and make sure they are at the right levels.

2. Keep your receipts. When you keep the records of maintenance and repairs you have done to your used cars, you can look back at them instead of getting the same job done twice or waiting too long between procedures. For instance, if you forgot when you had your oil changed last, just look for the record so you get it done at the proper time.

3. Look for the signs. Used cars rarely break down without warning. If you recognize the warning signs of an impending problem, you can often get it fixed before it becomes a costly problem.
